FEN :: the horns that sound in Dalston
In appreciation of last week’s preoccupation with ‘sounding’, ‘music’, and the unsung glories of noise, and in anticipation of their two day installation at CafeOTO in London’s Dalston, some information on quartet FEN (Far East Network):
Working between electric guitar, synthesized noise, keyboard and voice, FEN brings together four interesting musicians: Otomo Yoshihide from Tokyo, Yuen Chee Wai from Singapore, Ryu Hankil from Seoul, and Yan Jun from Beijing. The result could be facinating.
In the realm of philosophical thinking, the experimental work happening in group improvisation is interesting, playing off ideas of relationalism which transcend traditional notions of communication, playing out a fleeting dialogical sound-play. The results can be good or painful, but always stimulating; electronic/sound/noise takes an interesting step away from the solo-improv genius of Keith Jarrett, and asks some interesting questions of communication which requires greater focus.
[Is electronic-sound improvisation maybe a better metaphor for Twitter than 'birds sitting on a wire'?]
If the talk last week on ‘sounding’ was a little frilly around the edges, what it lacked in critical substance, it made up in passionate focus and dedication. The question of sound, noise, and its submission to to the dominant simplicity of the visual, is a ripe topic. In light of that, I thought I’d add the tag ‘sounding’, opening things here up to a little divergence from our (perfectly warranted) preoccupation with new media.
The show takes place on Thursday 5th, 8pm at cafeOTO, and again at Friday 6th, 8pm.
