Kajalie Shehreen Islam
I am a postgraduate student at the Centre for Media and Film Studies at SOAS, doing an MA in Critical Media and Cultural Studies. I completed my undergraduate and (first) postgraduate degrees in Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh. I am interested in gender and media, media and development, film and advertising in South Asia (specifically Bangladesh and India), and the Othering of the non-West (especially Islam) by the Western media.
I am currently on leave from my job of the last six years as a journalist with Star Magazine -http://www.thedailystar.net/magazine/ - of The Daily Star, the leading English newspaper in Bangladesh. I write on a range of issues, but tend to focus on human rights (until I begin to fall into the depths of depression, at which point I’ll cover something totally uncharacteristic of me). I also blog on similar issues for Unheard Voice – http://unheardvoice.net/blog/
.
I grew up in Bangladesh, India, Libya and Canada and am a somewhat split-personality Piscean. I like to read (fiction), write (non-fiction), eat food from around the world and sleep for as long as I possibly can.
